One year

This past Sunday was our one year wedding anniversary. One year! I can’t believe it. This has definitely been our best year yet. We decided to have a weekend long celebration starting Friday night. We walked to Oba in the Pearl District to try out their happy hour.

^^ Prickly Pear margarita, so so good!

The next morning we were woken up for the third day in a row of Oscar being sick so we decided to take him to the vet. Everything was good, he just ate something that didn’t agree with him. After a strict diet of rice and chicken, he’s good as new!

Afterwards we decided to stop at Blue Star Donuts and Barista for coffee and donuts.

Alex’s favorite is the Maple Bacon which is fantastic, but I LOVE the Dulce de Leche Hazelnut one. A lot of people say Voodoo Donuts is where it is at but I definitely disagree. Voodoo is good, but once I tried Blue Star I could never go back.

That afternoon, we picked up some food from Lucky Lab, and headed to the waterfront. The weather on Saturday was too good to pass up. We also brought our wine from our unity box from the wedding.

On Sunday we grabbed brunch at The Daily Cafe. I got their eggs benny and LOVED it. Their poached eggs are amazing.

When we got home, I moved our cake from the freezer to the refrigerator and a few hours later it was time to cut into it. Honestly, I didn’t expect much from our cake. Everyone had told me it would just taste like a freezer, be stale and not good at all. I really only kept it because everyone tells you its what you do. So, when we moved here we packed it up in a cooler and its been taking up too much space in our freezer ever since. And I’m so glad we did. The cake was amazing! Even better than I remembered it on our wedding day.  It was so awesome to have that moment with Alex again, too. Definitely one of the best decisions we made.

^^ It was a bit beat up, but so delicious!

And with that, our anniversary came to a close.

Alex, I love you more today than I did yesterday and I’ll love you more tomorrow than I do today. You breathe light into my life and I can’t imagine a minute without you. I’m so happy to be laughing through life with you. I like you and I love you.

Spring in Portland

You guys, Portland is seriously one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen in the spring. Living in Texas for the past ten years, spring was kind of nonexistent. It doesn’t normally stay cold enough in the winter for all the trees to lose all their leaves and then bloom again in the spring. But Portland, oh man. Everything was so bare when we moved here I thought for sure it would always look this dead:

But then a couple weeks ago, something magical happened. The sun came out and the flowers started to bloom. And it seriously is incredibly beautiful.

See what I mean?! Loving every second of it.

That time we drove 2200 miles across the country.

On December 1st, we woke up before the sun on a pallet on our living room floor. Everything was already packed away downstairs in our trailer ready to go. We got dressed, brought down a few more things and went back upstairs to say goodbye. Our first apartment. We got engaged, got married, adopted Oscar and truly grew as a couple in this place. It was our home. We shared some of our best memories here. The too small kitchen, our fireplace, the gigantic closet space. I was sad to see it go, but I knew we were headed for bigger, better things. So I took one last look around, touched the walls for the last time, and locked the door. I’m definitely not going to pretend this was easy, as excited as I was, I was terrified. It was something completely new to both of us, and I knew it would take a lot of adjusting.

But, we started the car and headed to our first destination, Durango Colorado.

^^cotton fields in west Texas.

Honestly, the first day of the trip went awesome. We drove, taking turns, for about sixteen hours and got to our hotel at around 10 P.M. that night. We hit no bad weather whatsoever and the whole drive, except for the very end driving down a mountain went extremely well. We stayed at a beautiful hotel with a balcony overlooking a river and a mountain and had a great breakfast the next morning.

We decided to sleep until around eight or so that morning since day one of the trip went so well and we thought we would just drive straight to Portland that day instead of stopping in Boise, Idaho, which was our original plan. From Boise it was only six hours, so eh, why not?

^^Utah was so beautiful!

The second leg of the trip was a completely different story than the first. Colorado and Utah weren’t that bad, just long. Once we hit Oregon, way up in the mountains we hit a massive snow storm and ended up driving 20 MPH for two hours just trying to get through it, while pulling a trailer. It was a completely surreal experience. We couldn’t even see three inches in front of us and there were all these stops on the side of the road for applying chains to the tires. We even started a convoy with these other trucks to help each other through it, that part was actually nice. But then, we finally made it past the mountains and the storm broke, thankfully. Worst is over, right?
At this point its like three A.M. and we were two hours from Portland. Extremely exhausted we pushed on. We had about half a tank of gas maybe 120 miles outside of Portland, and as our delirium was taking over, we thought we for sure would see another one before we got there.
100 miles later, and the gas light now looming, we kind of started freaking out. But we see a sign! Gas station! That way! So there we are, 5 am driving up the side of a mountain looking for said gas station which of course, was closed. So, now were sitting there, so much lower than defeated, and waiting for a man whose number I found online to come bring us gas. I can’t even convey the amount of terror, exhaustion, defeat, etc we felt sitting there that morning. We were 20 miles from Portland! We had made it so far and here we sat, so so close but so far away.
But, an hour later, an extremely nice man who I pulled out of sleep was there with the gas. So much relief, so ready to be there.  So now its 7 a.m. the sun is up and we had been driving since 9 a.m. the day before. Of course we got a little lost on the way in and OF COURSE once we got to the hotel, which was located downtown they let us know there was nowhere for us to park with the trailer in the hotel parking garage so we had to find street parking.
We were so done but we had to keep pushing. And pushing, and pushing.
But finally we were in the hotel room and Alex was sleeping, I on the other hand was not so lucky. My body gave up on this trip long before I was ready for it to. I was having severe anxiety problems(which I’ve never had a problem with before.) and I just couldn’t calm down. I let Alex sleep a couple more hours before pulling him out of bed proclaiming that I needed to stop being pulled in a million different directions and I just wanted to be moved into our new home. So by noon, we drove the mile or so to our new place and by three we were sitting on the living room floor, having our first meal together.

And, now, a month later I am finally feeling settled. I know where the grocery stores are, Oscar and I can go for long walks without fear of getting lost and all of our boxes are unpacked.
Thank freakin’ goodness.

Oh, and I made tons of videos along the way, I’m planning on complying them soon!

New Year’s Day.

Since Alex had the day off, we decided to start 2014 off the only way we know how- with a really really good breakfast.

We tried out Besaw’s which is in the Nob Hill, just a few blocks from us. I got the farmers hash and Alex got the Belgium waffle. Although mine was extremely good, Alex’s was AMAZING. Seriously, the best waffle I have ever had. It was so fluffy and even though you have to pay extra for the syrup(seriously?!) it was definitely worth it!

When we were walking back, we passed by a few of these:

Is this not the cutest thing you have ever seen?! It was a legit chain and everything. This may be the silliest thing I’ve ever said but so far, this is one of my favorite things about Portland. I like the creativity behind it and the fact that you know someone put it there just to make another person smile. This is such a giving and friendly city and I fall more and more in love with it each day. And the little sweaters?! Come on.

Oh, and here’s a picture of us last night before going out. Just because.

Happy New Year!

Portland!

We are finally here! Today marks our two weeks and we are completely in love. Everyone is friendly, the food is incredible and the city itself is so beautiful.

Here’s the living room of our apartment right now, yikes.

I’ll share more pictures of the apartment once we get some furniture, but I love our views and huge windows.

This is the building Alex works in! He loves his job so far. They had the company Christmas party on Friday and everyone he works with is so nice. He fits right in!

We woke up to snow one day last week! It didn’t last long but it was beautiful.

This is the view from our living room window.

My mom came to visit the first week we were here! It was really nice having her come so early into us being here and us both being able to experience the city for the first time together.

Like true tourists we’ve already been to Voodoo Donuts… twice. All the rumors are true, the donuts are phenomenal. I’m in love with the maple bacon bar and Alex is all about their fritters. They have a strawberry peach one, so so good!

My mom made sure we had a tree so we spent the day decorating and setting up our village. Definitely a different set up from last year( see here

I have a ton more pictures, these are just a few I pulled from my phone to make a quick blog post, but this is one of my favorites. I love all the trees decorated downtown and in the pearl district, its so awesome.
